What would you take with you?

What would you take with you?

Well, we are halfway through Lent. I hope you are doing well with the discipline you have chosen, whether it is giving something up or taking something on.

On Sunday we talked about the Prodigal Son and the 50-cent problem. We certainly hope you never find yourself on the business end of misfortune, but it is Lent, which brings us to an excellent opportunity to reflect on what is most important. So, in the spirit of Lent I would like for you to take on this challenge:

Find a bag you would have the physical ability to carry if it were full. Next, imagine if you were given 30 minutes to fill it with only the most important things. What would those things be?

I imagine there are all kinds of meanings, memories, and reasons why you picked the things you did. That is good and right. The things you picked represent people or memories shared with others – things like a family picture album or Grandpa Joe’s pocket knife.

The story of the Prodigal Son from Luke 15 reminds us that if God were doing the same exercise, He wouldn’t think twice. God would take you.Hosea 6:6 makes clear that God doesn’t desire our sacrifice. He desires mercy and acknowledgment of Him.

During Lent, our sacrifice is not special to God - it is merely the tool we use to fix our focus on Him. Why? Because what is important to God is you.

So Happy Lenting my friends - and finish strong these last three weeks!
